A skyscraper of more than 70 floors was evacuated in China, when the building, almost 300 meters high, began to "tremble" for an unknown reason, causing panic scenes.

The iconic SEG Plaza, completed in 2000, is located in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen with a population of 12 million and houses, among other things, a huge market for electrical products and offices.

The Shenzhen Emergency Management Agency told Weibo that it would "determine the cause of the vibrations" in the skyscraper, noting that "there was no earthquake in the area today."

The SEG Plaza started swaying around 12:30 on Tuesday, according to authorities. As a result, panic scenes were immediately provoked as panicked citizens who were shopping at that time started running to be saved. By 2 noon the building had been evacuated.

Hundreds of pedestrians can be seen running away from the building in videos posted on social media.

The tower is located in a district in the center of Shenzhen, known mainly for its huge pedestrian street that is full of shops and shopping malls.

After an inspection, officials in the Foutian district said they did not find "any cracks" in the ground around the building.

"No part of the wall has fallen or been damaged," they said in their official report.
