A San Francisco startup called Humane has been working on a mysterious device that its employees wear on their chests, attracting the curiosity of a local cop who often sees them outside the company's office. The device is called the Ai Pin, and it is a small, square gadget that can do many things that a smartphone can, but without requiring a screen.

Humane is finally revealing more details about the Ai Pin, which it plans to launch in the US on November 16 for $699, plus a monthly fee of $24 for unlimited phone, text, and data services through T-Mobile. The device can take pictures and send messages, project a laser interface onto the user's palm, and interact with a smart assistant that is as clever as ChatGPT. The company hopes that the Ai Pin can replace the need for smartphones and become a fashionable accessory.

The Ai Pin was first shown to the public at the TED conference and a Paris fashion week show earlier this year, where some of its basic features, such as web search and object recognition, were demonstrated. Today, the company also shared more information about the device's software and how the laser technology works to turn the user's hand into a display. The first orders will be delivered in early 2024.
