Basketball is evolving and technology is opening new horizons for the popular sport for the future.
At the U-19 Women's World Championship (15-23/7), for the first time in the history of the sport at such a level, an innovative and innovative glass floor will be used instead of the classic parquet.
The new floor went through many rigorous tests and was approved by FIBA's equipment and facilities program.
Its use contributes significantly to the implementation of one of FIBA's strategic priorities, supporting and encouraging innovation. It is essentially a complete video floor that enables interactive applications, optimized shows with huge additional features and options for advertising.
Most important of all, however, is that it enables players to be followed on the pitch, enabling real-time viewing of stats and achievements and providing viewers with the opportunity to interact, thus increasing engagement.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zaglis said: “It is with great pride that we look forward to watching the premiere of this glass-floored stadium on the world stage in July. This innovative surface, made possible by the recent regulation change, clearly shows FIBA's willingness to embrace new technology and innovation. It also highlights how determined FIBA is to promote our sport so we can make it even more attractive to fans while improving the experience for players.”
The president of the Spanish Federation, Jorge Garbajosa, highlighted the benefits that his country will have by hosting the U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Madrid between July 15 and 23. “We are very pleased and support the decision to use the glass-floored pitch for this important event, especially as we celebrate our 100th anniversary this year. As a former player, I know that the athletes preparing to compete in the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup will now be even more excited knowing that they will be the first to play in such a major event on this new state-of-the-art surface. We know it can provide us with additional opportunities from a marketing perspective, both in terms of working with commercial partners and improving the viewer experience.”
The glass floor will be used for all matches of the final phase of the World Cup at the Palacio de los Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid.
