Really huge is the lithium deposit discovered in India and officially announced a few days ago, a deposit that is expected to change the data in the transition of four wheels from conventional to electric models. For car battery packs, lithium is one of the main 'ingredients' (along with nickel and cobalt) and it is estimated that an average of eight (8) kilograms of lithium is needed to create an electric car battery pack

With lithium production sitting at around 100,000 tonnes per year and global reserves estimated at around 80 million tonnes (2021 data), the new mammoth deposit discovered in India is expected to bring some really big changes. According to the estimates announced by the Geological Survey of India, the new deposit is estimated at 5.9 million tons. Once the exploitation of the field begins, this quantity is able to cover the ever-increasing demand that is presented on an annual basis and at the same time lead to a reduction in the prices of "white gold", as lithium is called .

According to data presented by the World Bank, demand for lithium could increase by as much as 500% in the next 25 years, and the new large Indian deposit significantly increases the so far known global reserves.

This is the first massive deposit to be discovered in India and alone is capable of bringing the vast country to fifth place among lithium producing countries, above China. At the same time, the deposit is so large that it can break the "monopoly" of the so-called "Lithium Triangle" which is made up of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, which together hold more than 75% of the world's lithium reserves so far.

India currently imports 80% of its lithium needs, and the new deposit could easily turn things around in the future, making the sprawling country one of the world's largest producers by export ratio, while also strengthening its position as country that manufactures electric cars on its territory.
