Michael Packard was diving for lobsters when he came across the mammal's huge mouth, where it remained for at least 30-40 seconds, at the famous Cape Cod in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
After the witness seconds that seemed a century, the whale spat on him, leaving me with only one displaced knee.
According to the BBC, the 56-year-old Pagard and a colleague boarded their boat on Friday morning to go fishing. The weather was great and the visibility was impressive.
But as soon as the diver fell into the water, he felt "a huge blow and everything went dark".
At first he thought he had been attacked by a large white shark, one of those swimming in the area, "then I realized he had no teeth at all. Then I realized: My God, I am in the mouth of a whale trying to swallow me. That was it, I'm dying. "
The 56-year-old managed to think only of his wife and his two boys, aged 12 and 15.
"Then, suddenly, she rose to the surface of the sea and began to shake her head."
"He just threw me in the air and I 'landed' in the water. I was free and floating. I could not believe it".
Despite his wife's appeals, he has no plans to give up a 40-year career as a lobster fisherman on Cape Cod.
Larger whales tend to feed by opening their mouths wide to swallow as much prey as possible, such as fish or krill, leading marine scientists to speculate that what happened to Mr. Packard was probably purely coincidental.
An expert told the local newspaper Cape Cod Times that there has never been a record of a whale swallowing a human.
