As announced by Microsoft, the cessation of its support also means that the company will not release periodic security updates for Explorer.
The once hugely popular browser appeared in 1995 with Windows 95 and between 2000-2005 had a market share of 90% to 95% worldwide. Internet Explorer - now in its 11th edition - began to lose ground in the late 2000s after the advent of Google Chrome, which overtook Internet Explorer for the first time in 2012.
According to Statcounter, in April 2021 Chrome had a global market share of about 67% compared to 11% for Mozilla Firefox, 7% for Internet Explorer, 5% for Apple Safari and 4% for Edge.
Microsoft has clarified that the Explorer replacement, Microsoft Edge, which first appeared in 2015 with Windows 10, has an Internet Explorer compatibility feature that will continue to work, allowing users to "load" old Web pages.
The American company also recently announced that it will change, and in fact with "democratic" procedures, another of its historical features, the default font, which is Calibri in all its products since 2007. In this context, invited users around the world to vote for the new preferred font and the proven most popular will replace the Calibri.
