Some of these places, such as the 10,924-meter-deep Mariana Trench in the western Pacific, have been explored several times in the past, but this new mission has removed some of the remaining uncertainties about ocean abysses. In the Southern Ocean, for example, there is now a new place to consider as the deepest point of the region. This point is called the "Factorian Deep" and is located 7,432 meters below the surface at the southern end of the "South Sandwich" moat.
The new depth data collected is part of a study published in the Geoscience Data Journal. Caladan Oceanic LLC helped organize the expedition, led by Texan businessman and explorer Victor Veskovo. The Veskovo Limiting Factor team carried out a huge number of measurements of sea water temperature and salinity at all levels down to the ocean floor. This information was vital in correcting the depth measurements made by the boat equipment. The newly calculated depths have high confidence, even with uncertainties at around 15 meters.
The main goal of the mission is to better map the seabed. Until recently, about 80% of the global seabed remained to be explored using modern tools provided by the Five Deeps Expedition. "In 10 months, we mapped an area the size of mainland France. "But inside it was a section the size of Finland that was completely new, where the seabed had never been explored before," said Dr Heather Stewart of the British Geological Survey. "It shows what can and should be done in the future." The new data is provided in the "Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030" program, which aims to create a world map of the ocean floor by the end of the decade.
