OneWeb, a London-based technology company trying to develop a global Internet space service, hit a major milestone on Thursday.

The company successfully launched another 36 satellites, bringing its "constellation" to 254. Although many more are still needed to complete the network, these satellites are enough to start offering a commercial service in much of the Northern Hemisphere. This is expected to happen at the end of the year.

"These things do not happen overnight, a lot of hard work has been done in recent months. But this launch is special, "said Neil Masterson, chief executive of OneWeben.

"This is what gives us connectivity of 50 degrees north latitude at the North Pole and covers northern Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Alaska and Iceland," he told BBC News.

The new "dose" of satellites was launched from the Vostovny cosmodrome in the Russian Far East. The Soyuz rocket was launched at 21.48 local time and the successful release of all vessels, as well as the reception of their signals, were achieved about five hours later.

It has been more than a year since the British government and the Indian consortium Bharti Global acted to save OneWeb from bankruptcy, putting $ 500 million into the company. Since then, others have joined the program, believing it to be sustainable. Among them is the French Eutelsat.

According to the BBC, Bhartia's decision this week to put an additional $ 500 million into the project effectively completes the funding needed to send the rest of the constellation's satellites - a fleet into orbit of 650 vessels. This will require another 10 launches, which is expected to happen by the end of 2022.

OneWeb's big competitor is Starlink's Elon Musk, billionaire founder of SpaceX. Starlink has more than 1,500 satellites in orbit, and more are expected to follow, as its network architecture requires more boats than Web.
