The story of the Indianapolis Amtrak Station is deeply rooted in the city's rich railway history. The original Union Station, opened in 1853, was the first "union" station in the United States, bringing together multiple railroads under one roof. Designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by architect Thomas Rodd, the station featured a grand headhouse with a clock tower and a vast train shed that accommodated numerous tracks. Over the years, the station underwent several renovations, including a significant rebuild in 1888 to accommodate the growing number of passengers and trains.
