As technology evolves at a rapid pace, both large computer companies and many research teams around the world are trying to build computers that work by imitating the mechanisms and functions of the human brain.

Various techniques and methods have been developed to make a computer think like a human. The latest effort comes from a research team at Northwestern University and the University of Hong Kong that created a computer that learns from human experience.

The human brain has synapses that connect neurons using chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Strengthening the connection between two neurons results in the creation of memories. Inspired by this mechanism, the researchers created a "synaptic transistor," an organic electrochemical device that traps ions that act as neurotransmitters.

Ion trapping allows the device to remember previous actions and make new connections. The researchers performed with sensory stimuli combined with the use of light and the device learned through the process of repetition to recognize how it should act on each stimulus.

"Although modern computers are incredible machines, the human brain still excels greatly in certain complex processes such as pattern recognition, motion control and the simultaneous use of many senses. This is achieved thanks to the plasticity of the synapses that are the basic building material of the computing power of the brain. "Synapses allow the brain to work at high speeds in many parallel tasks, to overcome errors and to be energy efficient," said Jonathan Rivney, a professor of biomedical engineering at Northwestern University who believes that computers will work with technology. they will be able to continue working without any problems even if a system or component breaks down.
